The First Descendant
Bringing HDR10+ Gaming to life through an immersive digital experience.
/ 01 Overview
HDR10+ Technologies needed a page that shows what HDR10+ Gaming means to players, using a real game. Working with the 5ivecanons team, I developed the WordPress page for The First Descendant: a custom template built from reusable modules, with motion and media that hold up on every screen.
/ My Role
Template: Custom WordPress page template
Modules: Reusable sections for hero, comparison, and feature content
Interaction: Carousel, video, and motion from the approved design
Responsive: Desktop, tablet, and mobile layouts
/ 02 The Challenge
Explain a display standard with the energy of a game launch. The page had to feel cinematic for players while staying clear about what HDR10+ Gaming actually does.
/ What Had to Work
Immersion
Large game visuals and video, presented without clutter.
Clarity
A plain explanation of the standard and its benefits.
Performance
Heavy media that still loads and scrolls smoothly.
Every screen
The same story on a large monitor, a tablet, and a phone.
Reuse
Sections the team could update or reuse without new code.
/ 03 The World’s First HDR10+ Gaming Title
A first for the standard. Samsung announced The First Descendant, developed by NEXON, as the world’s first HDR10+ Gaming title. The game was unveiled at Gamescom 2023.
- HDR10+ Gaming is a display standard created by HDR10+ Technologies, LLC
- NEXON developed The First Descendant
- Samsung announced the title as the standard’s first game
/ 04 Custom WordPress Development
A dedicated template inside an existing site. I built the page as a custom WordPress template, so it could look like a game launch while still living in, and being managed from, the HDR10+ site.
/ What I Built
Page template
A dark, full-width layout with the site’s shared header and footer.
Hero & video
A headline panel over the brand mark, followed by an embedded gameplay video.
Comparison
An SDR and HDR10+ carousel with previous and next controls.
Styling
Spectrum gradient borders and type that echo the HDR10+ Gaming identity.
/ 05 Modular Content System
Built in blocks, so the next title doesn’t start from zero.
Each part of the page is its own section. The team can change copy, swap media, or reorder the story without touching the template.
- Hero panelHeadline, summary, and call to action
- VideoEmbedded gameplay footage
- Comparison carouselSDR and HDR10+ image pairs
- Benefit cardsA responsive grid of feature cards
- News featureImage, story summary, and link out
/ 06 Why HDR10+ Gaming
Seven reasons, one grid. The page makes the case for the standard in short cards that reflow from four columns to one.
Summarized in my own words from the benefits HDR10+ Technologies lists on the live page.
Immersive Gaming Experience
Brighter highlights and deeper shadows, closer to what the game’s creators intended.
Automatic HDR Gaming
The game and display switch into HDR10+ Gaming mode on their own, without manual calibration.
Optimize for Display
The picture is tuned to what each display is able to show.
No Latency
Better HDR picture quality without a trade-off in game performance.
Upgrade Your Game
More true-to-life visuals from current display technology.
Worry-Free HDR Game Development
Certification gives developers confidence that HDR will look consistent.
Implement Once, Use Everywhere
One implementation works across HDR10+ Gaming TVs and monitors, saving development and QA time.
/ 07 Performance & Responsive Media
Rich media, still quick on a phone. Large visuals and video scale to each screen, and each module stacks in a clear order as the viewport narrows.
/ Across Devices
- Benefit cards reflow from four columns to two, then one
- The comparison carousel becomes a single, stacked view
- The header keeps all three logos and a compact menu
- Gradient borders and type scale with the layout
- Video and imagery stay full-width at every size
One page, three widths The full page on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Scroll inside the frame to see it all.
/ 08 Visual Showcase
/ 09 Outcome
A launch page for a new standard and a template for the titles after it.
- An immersive page for the first HDR10+ Gaming title
- A clear, visual explanation of the standard’s benefits
- A custom template inside the existing WordPress site
- Reusable modules the team can update and reorder
- Responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile
/ 10 Reflection
The best technical explainers feel like the product they describe. This project was about letting a game carry the story of a display standard, and building it in modules so the next title can follow the same path.
